I did some research into external video capture devices, and everything seemed to point to the Canopus. I wasn't disappointed - it does an excellent job of capturing video, even on a 2-year old laptop. I have used it to capture about 4 hours of video tapes for transfer to DVDs. The video and audio quality was true to the originals, and I never had audio/video sync problems that apparently are common with non-Canopus equipment. The product has a warning sticker, "When you connect or remove the DV [Firewire] cable, please make sure the power of both PC and this product are off. This product will be damaged because of a voltage surge." I consider this unacceptable. A major feature of Firewire is its ability to connect and disconnect things without rebooting. Why I needed this: I wanted to convert a bunch of my old tapes into DVDs, but when I read the reviews of those products, I was scared off by reports of myriad problems and glitches. The good reviews for the Canopus encouraged me to try it and I was not disappointed! How it works: The Canopus plugs into your PC's 1394 (Firewire) port (if your PC doesn't have one, you can get an add-on card for about $30). The Canopus has no software. I have a 14 year old analog 8mm camcorder and have tried for years to figure out how to convert them easily to digital format so I may edit them and make DVD movies. A few highlights that you WONT find in many many cheaper products: -Audio STAYS on sync with video (there is an audio sync lock) -Analog to Digital AND digital to Analog. -Doesn't require a power plug -Simple to use -You can use it with your own video editing program EASILY. This is one of the best devices to use for converting analog type video, such as old VHS camcorder footage, to digital video that can be edited and transferred to DVDs. Digital camcorders previously had built-in converters that could do this conversion, but many newer models don't. See a good description at Videoguys website. The customer service line was helpful to resolve the software problem that kept me from previewing the video . With this unit the Preview function is important, as that is how you adjust for improved video quality when converting, and cleaning up, older analog video tapes to digital. I have a lot of old Hi-8 and S-VHS videotapes that I need to transfer to digital format. I have tried several analog to digital converters and none of them worked very well. Up until I discovered the Canopus ADVC-300 I found that the best way to do the conversion was by passing the video through a high quality digital camera. FireWire - Apple's trademarked name for the IEEE 1394 external bus standard. This is an extremely fast computer port that can be used to connect up to 63 devices. FireWire supports isochronous data, meaning that it can deliver data at a guaranteed rate. Other trademarked names for the IEEE 1394 standard include i.link and Lynx.
If you want the simplicity that comes with the cable receiver being integrated with the TV then you should buy a TV with a cable card slot. However if you like TiVo then you would instead get a DVR, which will have its own cable card slot.
