Bass Reflex Speakers - A speaker design that uses the cabinet to produce low bass frequencies by incorporating a tuned port.
Baud Rate - Used interchangeably with "Bits Per Second." The unit of measure used to rate the speed at which computer data can be translated via modem. Typical modem rates are 2,400, 9,600, 14,400, and 28,000 baud.
FM - Frequency Modulation. "Line of sight" radio transmission less susceptible to atmospheric and electrical interference. Cellular telephones operate using frequency modulation.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) - A graphics file format common to online services and the Internet. A GIF utilizes a Ito 8-bit palette to minimize file size (pronounced "jiff").
Simulcast - The broadcast of the same program simultaneously over two or more different systems or channels, such as in HDTV and in NTSC. CRTC regulations require today that broadcasters simulcast much of their schedules.
SmartMedia - A digital camera memory format currently used by some Olympus and Fuji cameras. These companies are using xD-Picture cards in their newer cameras, raising the possibility that the SmartMedia format is on the way out. SmartMedia cards are available in sizes up to 128MB.
